Peter “Pete” Carlson, age 59, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2019, in Sioux Falls, SD. A private celebration of Pete’s life will take place at a later date in both South Dakota and Pennsylvania.
Pete Carlson was born in 1960 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. His family moved to Watertown, SD in 1963. Pete graduated from Watertown High School in 1978. He worked as a glazier, glass artist, and business owner for most of his life. He lived in the Philadelphia, PA metropolitan area for close to twenty years, returning to Watertown, SD in 2005.
Pete married Laurie Durham (Carlson) Hemmer on July 29, 1978. They had two daughters (Jesi Carlson and Emy Carlson). He married Stacy Lerch (Carlson) on September 24, 1988. They had one daughter (Avery Carlson).
Pete loved aviation and obtained his private pilot’s license. He was also a skilled glass artist, creating many beautiful mirrors, sculptures, and stained glass pieces throughout his life. Pete enjoyed hunting, water sports, sailing, traveling, and spending time with his family and friends. He assisted with the restoration of the Goss Opera House in Watertown, SD. He loved driving his grandfather’s 1960 Buckboard Go Kart in the Watertown Fourth of July parade each year. He had a very outgoing personality, an unforgettable smile, and was the life of any party.
Pete is survived by his parents, Jerry and Marvel Carlson of Watertown, his sister, Tammy Carlson of Sioux Falls, his brother, Paul Carlson of Watertown, his children: Jesi Carlson (Pete Rotkis) of Alexandria, VA, Emy Carlson of Watertown, SD, Avery Carlson (Seth Gaskins) of Nampa, Idaho, and 5 grandchildren. Britni Hemmer of St. Louis Park, MN, was also like a daughter to Pete.
His beloved wife, Stacy, and his maternal and paternal grandparents preceded Pete in death.
