Virginia M. Erickson, age 100, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at the Huron Regional Medical Center in Huron, SD.
Virginia’s family will be holding a celebration of life and committal service on Sunday, October 13, 2024.
Burial will be at De Smet Cemetery.
Virginia was born March 4, 1924, at home near De Smet, SD, to Henry (Hank) and Selma (Nelson) Erickson. She joined a brother, Roy, born in 1921. She graduated from De Smet High School in 1942 and moved to Huron, SD, working odd jobs and also as a model for JC Penney. She especially enjoyed modeling hats and wearing make-up and lipstick- oh, the red lipstick! And fingernails!
She was injured in a serious car accident resulting in her having epileptic seizures, causing her to return to De Smet to live with her parents. She cared for them until they each passed away. In 1984, she sold the farm and moved to St. Petersburg, FL, with her friend, Iver Isaacson, and lived there for 40 years. She made many good friends while living there but as she neared 90 years of age, she returned to SD, living in Aberdeen. In 2018, she moved to Huron, SD, to be nearer to family. She was very active and living on her own and very amazed and proud that she was 100 years old and thankful that she could celebrate that occasion with family and friends. It was a grand old time!
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother; grandparents, Louis and Ellen (Anderson) Nelson, Ollie and Nettie (Olson) Erickson; and her friend Iver.
She is survived by first cousins: Jim (Betty) Erickson, Bernice (Jack) Herman, Dick, David, and Gene Herman; several 2nd generation cousins of which Monte (Dawn) Nipp, Marilora Nipp, and Marlin (Carla) Nipp, Brenda (Leroy) Kruse, Kathy (Craig) Connell, Tim Matthews, Shelley Noonan, and Marilyn (Roger) Bauer have many fond memories. She was and will always be cherished by each of us.
