Viola Emelia (Schanbeck) Linngren, age 87, of Watertown, SD, passed away with family members holding her hands on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown, SD. Pastor Cheryl Rondeau-Bassett will officiate. Music will be provided by Danny Schmidt. Funeral services will be live-streamed via the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel Facebook page.
Visitation will take place prior to services at the church on Wednesday beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Burial will be at Tabor Lutheran Cemetery in Strandburg, SD. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Lemire, Jeff Ostlund, Ron Peterson, Doyle Peterson, Rich Linngren and George Linngren.
Viola was born on April 23, 1935, in Watertown, SD, to Harold and Mary (Oldfield) Schanbeck. Her family moved to the Clark area when she was three years old. She attended grade school through the eighth grade at Mclain School, Garfield Township, Clark County. Viola then attended Clark High School and graduated in 1953. Following graduation, Viola ventured off to Minneapolis, MN, with some of her friends, working at various places.
In September of 1959, Viola married John A. Linngren. To this union two children were born, Donna and Steven. The family made their home in Minneapolis and then moved to Columbia Heights, MN. After John passed away, Viola moved back to South Dakota and lived in Strandburg. She lived there for several years then made her final home at Jenkins Town View Apartments in Watertown, SD.
Viola was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Columbia Heights, MN, Tabor Lutheran Church in Strandburg, SD, and most recently Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown, SD. Viola’s kind and compassionate spirit led her to a life of volunteering. She dedicated numerous hours every week to the Milbank, SD, community. She was a true treasure to everyone that had the pleasure of knowing her. Viola will be truly missed by her family.
Viola is survived by her children, Donna Rackow of Aberdeen, SD, and Steven Linngren of Duluth, MN; two grandchildren, Zachary Rackow and Cassandra (Jeremy) Lemire of Aberdeen, SD; her great-grandson, Jackson Lemire of Aberdeen, SD; one brother, Lyle Schanbeck; two sisters, Helen Schmidt of Willow Lake, SD, and Louise (Roger) Danielson of Little Falls, MN; her brother-in-law, Merle Peterson of Watertown, SD; and several nieces and nephews.
Viola was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents, Harold and Mary; her grandparents; one brother, Clifford Schanbeck; three sisters: Lucille Peterson, Lori Rosenberg and Marilyn Schanbeck; two sisters-in-law, Carol Schanbeck and Karen Schanbeck; her brother-in-law, Don Schmidt; her niece, Connie Marchant; and her special friend, Lonnie Lundberg.
