Verna Greene Obituary
Verna E. Greene, age 92, of Watertown, SD, formerly of Hayti, SD, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2020, at Avantara Lake Norden care center. She was the widow of Irvin Greene. Private family services will be held.
Verna was born on March 18, 1927, to John and Mathilda (Genter) Gebhardt, in Monango, ND. She attended rural grade school in Hamburg Twsp, ND and graduated from Monango High School. Verna was a member of the Monango girls state high school basketball team of 1945. After graduation she attended Ellendale State Normal College.
On June 17, 1947, Verna was united in marriage to Irvin Greene in Fargo, ND. The couple moved to Cresbard, SD and eventually to Hayti in 1983. Verna worked as a custodian at the Cresbard High School. She was a member of the Hayti Lutheran Church, the Legion Auxiliary, D.A.V and VFW and the rural letter carriers association. Vera enjoyed music, performing with the "Young at Heart Band" "The Country Gals" "Jolly Dutchmen" and "Country Nytes".
Verna is survived by her brother, Delmon (Judy) Gebhardt of Sioux Falls, SD; sister-in-law May Gebhardt of Fargo, ND; several nieces and one nephew.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin; her parents; her brothers, Clarence, Art and Allen; and her sisters, Elsie, Irene and Evonne.
