Thelma Hayden Obituary

Thelma I. Hayden, age 87 of De Smet died on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at her home.

Her services will be held at St. Thomas Catholic Church in De Smet on Saturday November 19 at 10:00 AM. Visitation will be on Friday from 5-7 PM also at the church. Osthus Funeral Home of De Smet is in charge of arrangements for the family. In lieu of flowers the family requests the charity of your choice. Thelma Irene ( Herll) Hayden was born on a small farm near Epiphany, SD on July 21, 1929, the fourth of 5 children born to Mathias and Lucy Herll.

She attended elementary school Green Valley Country School near Roswell. SD, her first three years of high school at Argonne High School and her senior year at St Agatha High School in Howard, SD.

She worked for a brief time in Sioux Falls, SD before returning to Howard.

While in high school she met the love of her life and married Jack Hayden on April 26, 1949 at Carthage, SD and lived on a farm 10 miles south of De Smet. Thelma was a full-time homemaker doing all the things a farm wife does while she and Jack raised six children.

She gardened, canned and raised chickens.

She was active in her community as a 4-H leader, Community Club, and NFO member.

She was very active in her parish where she served on the Ladies Alter Society, taught catechism classes and served as a eucharistic minister at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Jack passed away October 16, 1971.

Thelma managed to fulfill the dream she shared with Jack and eventually paid off the mortgage on the farm. She sold the farm in 1992, and continued to live in the farm house until September of 2011.

At that time, she moved into the Prairie Park Apartment complex in De Smet.

For years she enjoyed traveling to Madison for dance night with friends she had met there. She was a loyal blood donor to the Red Cross during her life. Though her children lived throughout the Midwest, she stayed close with them, spending holidays and family reunions together. She is survived by three daughters, Margaret, Theresa and Patricia; two sons, Thomas and Joseph; 10 grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Barb. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Jack; son Stephen; three sisters; one brother; and a daughter-in-law Felice.
