Stanley Peterson Obituary

Stanley Selmer Peterson, age 69, of Watertown SD, passed away April 9, 2020 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown SD.
He fought a long 3 year battle with cancer, in the end he developed bronchitis and pneumonia that ended up taking him. Through it all he kept up good spirits and he died with his glass half full, with his family at his side. He also died with all of his brown hair, Debby always said "it's who you live with".
Private Family Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel. Rev. Dan Ofstehage will officiate. This will be Live-Streamed on our website.
A Public Drive-Thru visitation will be at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel on Monday, April 13, 2020, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. The immediate family will be outside and you can wave and say hello from your vehicle as you drive through.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Stan was born on August 14, 1950 at Watertown SD to Selmer and Betty (Floden) Peterson.
He attended grade school in Mount Pleasant #43 and graduated from Florence High School.
He then went to Machine Tool at Lake Area in Watertown SD, where all three of his boys followed in his footsteps.
He was a member of the National Guard for 6 years.
On March 5, 1976 Stan met Debby (Weyer) and on March 25, 1976 he proposed.
They were married on April 16, 1977 at New Helgen Lutheran Church in Florence SD.
They were 6 days short of their 43rd wedding anniversary when he passed.
He worked at Quadee, Solar Gas, and then he worked for Smith Equipment in Watertown for 22 years. In 2003 he semi-retired and enjoyed mowing lawns until 2017. He always told his boys that he worked hard to give them a better life than he had.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and anything else he could do with his sons. He spent a lot of time with his family playing card games and marbles. He enjoyed building, he helped all 3 of his sons build sheds, additions, or any other project they needed. He built most of their house at the lake where his boys were raised and where Debby and he lived in until his passing.
Later in life when Stan became a grandfather, he spent a lot of his time with his grandchildren. When Stan passed, all 7 of his grandchildren lived within 10 miles of his house. He tried to make it to as many of the grandchildren's school programs and sporting events as he could. One of his favorite things to do was to go out to the farm and see the kids start to get into hunting on the land that he grew up hunting on. He looked forward to playing cards with his card buddies on Monday and Thursday mornings. He loved to take the guys Carmel rolls.
He played until his health made him stop.
Stan and Debby loved spending time in Deadwood, looking at all the old buildings. They would get the same hotel room with a crick outside the window that they would listen to as they fell asleep. In the fall of 2019 he took Debby, the boys, and their wives to Deadwood, this had always been a dream of his. But more than anything he was a loving husband and father, his family always came first.
When this first started, and after Stan's lung was removed, and we were back in Watertown, one night he couldn't breathe, so we took him in to the ER and they admitted him, his nurse was Patrick.
He was awesome, and told us we should get Home Health to help us.
And we did and that is how we got Wonder Woman, our home health nurse Missy.
We know Stan would not have made it 3 years without her, she was his rock. Then when Stan went to the hospital April 9, 2020 we could not go see him yet, and when the phone rang and the nurse said "This is Patrick, I got Stan" We also want to thank Dr. Jon, who was so wonderful, Dr. Harb, Dr. Molina, Dr. Addo and all the doctors and nurses that helped on his journey.
Stan is survived by his wife, Debby, and three sons, Jess (Melissa) Peterson, Cody (Susie) Peterson, and Dusty (Heather) Peterson, all from Watertown, SD; seven Grandchildren, Elijah, Ben, Skylir, Sara, Korbin, David and Zoey Peterson; one brother, Wayne (Debra) Peterson, from Wallace SD; one sister, Sheryl Ward, from Castlewood, SD; and one sister-in-law, Linda Peterson, from Florence, SD.
He was preceded in death by his godson Chad Peterson; his brother; Steve; his father, Selmer and his mother, Betty. We would like to Thank Dr. Svien Senne and Jodi Engels from Pastoral Care from Prairie Lakes Hospital for going above and beyond with the compassion you gave to all of us and Stanley. There are no words to express how much this meant to us to be there in his final hours and be able to say goodbye to him.
We will never forget what you did for all of our family.
