Sandra “Sandy” Lee Steen, age 85, of De Smet, SD, passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at Silver Plains Assisted Living in Lake Preston, SD.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, September 8, 2023, at American Lutheran Church in De Smet, SD. Pastor Jim Millman will officiate with music provided by Mary Weerts as organists and Rev. Karie Geyer and Jeanna Schinderling as vocalists. Active pallbearers will be Sandy’s grandsons: Alan Brown, David Geyer, Mathew Scott, Thomas Schinderling, Daniel Fritz, Mike Schinderling, and Douglas Geyer. Honorary pallbearers will be Sandy’s granddaughters: Dr. Lisa Miller, Rachel Reihe, Heather Sisson, Meredith Popovic, Jennifer Urbach, and Theresa Brown. The service will be livestreamed via the Crawford-Osthus website.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Home in De Smet, SD.
Burial will be at De Smet Cemetery following the funeral.
On December 19, 1937, Sandra Lee Steen was born to Dr. Earl and Vivian (Hoffman) Fountain in Clark, SD. She graduated from Clark High School in 1955. Sandy married Norman Steen on July 14, 1956, in Clark, SD. The young couple would have four children, two sons and two daughters. Sandra and Norman raised their children in De Smet. Later on, Sandra began attending accounting and business classes at SDSU.
Sandra worked as secretary at American Lutheran Church in De Smet, SD, as well as a bookkeeper at the Country Club. She also worked for several years at the Coast-to-Coast in De Smet. She was a secretary for Kingbrook Rural Water. She finished her work career as Business Manager/Administrative Assistant at the Good Samaritan Center.
If there was music, you could always find Sandy dancing along. She also loved to play games, be it cards or otherwise. She was very active in the community volunteering at the Food Pantry and numerous committees at the American Lutheran Church.
Sandy is survived by her children: Gary (Rose) Steen of Watertown, SD, Connie (Sam) Geyer of De Smet, SD, and Janet Schinderling of Huron, SD; thirteen grandchildren: Dr. Lisa Miller, Rachel (Mark) Reihe, Mathew Scott, Daniel (Toni) Fritz, Heather (Sage) Sisson, Meridith (Ryan) Popovic, David (Rev. Karie) Geyer, Douglas Geyer, Jennifer Urbach, Alan (Stephanie) Brown, Theresa (Mike Cameron) Brown, Thomas (Jeanna) Schinderling, and Michael (Richard Bidmead) Schinderling; twenty-one great-grandchildren: Garet, Ethan, Owen, Anne, Keagan, Emma, Dari, Kenley, Syri, Charley, Teddy, Paisley, Hadley, Mahree, Reed, Raymond, Grant, Cody, Lexy, Logan, and Parker; sister, Daphane Swain of Bagley, MN; three sisters-in-law: Claryce Foster, Carolyn (Leo) Smith, and Helen (Don) Bailey; as well as two sons-in-law, Rondo Brown and Mahlon Schinderling.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; son, John; parents, Dr. Earl and Vivian; granddaughter, Melanie Geyer; parents-in-law, John and Thelma Steen; as well as two brothers-in-law, George Swain and Allen Foster.
