Sally Jo Heuer, age 77, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at her residence. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Cornerstone Church in Watertown, SD. Rev. Steve Anderson will officiate.
Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Friday, May 26, 2023, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and will continue prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown, SD. Honorary pallbearers will be her Bible Study group and her Red Hat friends. Active pallbearers will be: Courtney Hernandez, Robby Poore, Cael Heuer, Logan Kendig, Elijah Kendig, Isaiah Kendig, Miles Kendig and Liam Hernandez.
Sally was born on August 22, 1945, in San Marcos, TX, to John and Betty (Miller) Maurer. She graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School in Overland Park, KS, in 1963. She then attended the University of Kansas and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1967. She began her teaching career in Kansas City, KS.
On April 3, 1971, Sally married Dennis Heuer in Overland Park, KS. Two children were born to this union, Brian and Jennifer. The couple moved to a farm in rural Summit, SD, where Sally got a teaching position in South Shore. She worked in the school district for 16 years before retiring in 2006. Sally wasn’t quite ready to end her teaching career so she became a substitute teacher for schools around the Watertown area.
Sally was a member of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and attending Bible Study. She loved sending out cards for every occasion. Sally always put her grandchildren first, never missing an event or activity.
Sally is survived by her husband, Dennis of Watertown, SD; her children, Brian (Noelle) Heuer of Watertown, SD, and Jennifer (Jed) Regnier of Crooks, SD; nine grandchildren: Courtney (Louie) Hernandez, Robby Poore, Cael Heuer, Logan Kendig, Elijah Kendig, Isaiah Kendig, Miles Kendig and Isabelle and Haylie; her great-grandson, Liam Hernandez; her sisters, Susan Randolph and Mary Lou Framel; her brothers, John (Jan) Maurer, Jr. and W. Miller Maurer; her brother-in-law, Eugene Heuer; her 2 sister-in-laws: Jan (Butch) Olson and Millie Carlis; and several nieces and nephews.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents, John and Betty; her brothers-in-law: Gary Randolph, William Framel and Jack Carlis; her sister-in-law, Sylvia Heuer; and her in-laws, Elmer and Blanche Heuer.
Sally’s family would like to give a sincere thank you to Dr. Vinod and his staff at the Avera Cancer Center in Brookings and Sioux Falls. Another special thank you goes out to Millie and her late husband, Jack Carlis and Mary Pludt for being such good support and friends to Sally.
