Ruben E. Schulz, age 89, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at the local hospital. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Watertown. Pastor Aaron Asmus will officiate. Music will be provided by Dawn LaMee.
Visitation will be held at the church prior to the memorial service at 10:00 a.m.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion, Watertown, and the Military Funeral Honors Team of the SD Army National Guard. Honorary urn bearers will be Ruben’s coffee and lunch buddies. Active urn bearers will be Jamie Erickson, Scott Schulz, Tom Schulz and Taylor Erickson.
Ruben Schulz was born on August 12, 1936, to William Schulz and Anna (Hinkelman) Eidness. Ruben attended and graduated from school in Waubay.
After graduating from Waubay High School, Ruben dedicated himself to military service, first in the National Guard and later in the full-time Army. Upon returning home, he became a pillar of the local community, known for helping local farmers and working at the Watertown Lockers butcher shop. Ruben eventually fulfilled his dream by farming for himself. Ruben’s favorite job was driving school bus for around 20 years.
On October 27, 1957, Ruben was united in marriage to Patricia J. Klucas at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown. Together, they raised two children, Rick and Robin, and built a life centered on their family.
Ruben was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia, his parents, William Schulz and Anna (Hinkelman) Eidness, and brothers, William and Lavern.
He is survived by his children, Rick (Wendy) Schulz and Robin Engebretson, both of Watertown; brother, David Schulz of Upton, WY; grandchildren, James Erickson, Scott Schulz, and Tom Schulz; great-grandchild, Taylor Erickson; and great-great-grandchildren, Xavier Rudebusch, and Clayton Miller.
