Richard Charles Butala “RC”, 88, of Watertown, SD, went to be with the Lord on Sunday December 13th, 2020 at the Avantara nursing home in Milbank.
On Friday, December 18th at 1:00 p.m, a private family memorial service will be held at the Family Worship Center Church in Watertown, SD. The service will be live-streamed via Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel’s Facebook Live. Pastor Steve Ferguson of Family Worship Center Foursquare Church will officiate.
Richard was born on January 29th, 1932 at home in Richmond Minnesota to Michael Butala and Anna (Moser) Butala. Upon graduating high school in Havana, ND, he married the love of his life Delly (Delphine) Gritten on March 9th, 1950 in Webster, South Dakota. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2020. Out of his love and commitment to Delly he never removed his wedding band.
During the Korean war, from 1951 – 1955 Richard served honorably in the United States Navy as a Communications Technician Petty Officer 3rd Class. His most significant duty assignement was at the U.S. Naval communications station in Guam, where he earned a national defense service medal. After military service, Dick and Delly moved to Watertown, SD to begin working at Thompson Yards as their bookkeeper and later Building Products Inc. They then moved to California to be close to grandkids and work with family at Stephens Hay and Grain. Dick and Delly finally settled in Watertown for retirement and to live a life serving and giving to anyone who knew them.
Dick and Delly, along with two other couples helped plant the Family Worship Center Foursquare Church and served as elders there for more than 50 years.
He enjoyed spending time on the weekends fishing and hunting, and diligently set Sundays aside for worship at church and for rest at home with the family. Honoring God was first and foremost his entire adult life.
With being in the building material industry, he was skilled in building and remodeling, and could fix just about anything else with perfection.
He is survived by his wife, Delly; their children: Dawn Scott (Dick) from Portland, OR, Dan Butala (Ronda) from Bend, OR, Debbie Stephens (Wayne) from Mounds, OK, Doug Butala (Joanie) from Watertown, SD; nine grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Frances Solomon and Florence Juneman, brother Ed Butala, granddaughter Sandra Lee Stephens and great-granddaughter Lily Jo Stephens.
Dick served his family faithfully, was faithful to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and today is walking the golden streets of Glory – His Heavenly Home!
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Family Worship Center.
