Paul Lupo, Jr., age 83, Watertown, South Dakota, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2025 at Avantara Watertown. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown. Pastor Michael Enderle will officiate.
Visitation will be at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion, Watertown, and Funeral Honors Team of the U.S. Navy.
Paul was born March 11, 1942, in Leaksville, North Carolina, to Rev. Paul and Roxie (Simmons) Lupo in Leaksville, North Carolina. A graduate of Leesburg High School in Florida, he continued his education at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, and Old Dominion University of Norfolk, Virginia.
After his schooling, Paul joined the Navy and was stationed at various duty stations including Newfoundland, Scotland, Japan and stateside at Albany, Georgia, and Norfolk, Virginia. He served on several ships including the USS South Carolina and the USS John F. Kennedy. Chief Petty Officer Paul Lupo, Jr. retired from the Navy in 1989 after 29 years of service. He was the recipient of multiple awards for meritorious service.
An avid reader, Paul enjoyed studying the history of the civil war period of United States’ history both in books and by visiting battle sites. Paul collected coins as well as civil war relics. He qualified to become a member of the Sons of the Confederacy organization. Paul also enjoyed listening to a wide range of music ranging from opera to the music of the 50’s – 70’s especially the music of the Beatles.
On July 19, 2003, Paul married Yvonne Lee in Union, West Virginia. In 2005, they moved to Watertown where Paul became involved in community activities. A member of Harvest Baptist Church, Paul conducted a men’s Bible study. Even after moving into the nursing home, Paul continued with a Bible study.
Paul enjoyed gardening – flowers, cacti, and other plants. He especially liked spending time with his dog Charlie and with Biddy Bitty Bird.
Paul is survived by his wife Yvonne, of Watertown; his son, Matthew Lupo; his step-daughter, Jodi Johnson; his daughters Dawn Lupo and Sondra Lupo; his brother George Lupo; his sisters Lillian Turner and Charmaine (Mark) Gabel.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents.
