Nelson was born on November 7, 1939, in Worthington, MN to Merle and Kathryn (Hinders) Ransom. He attended school through the 8th grade at Harris, IA. At that time, he began raising sheep and also helped various farmers in the area. In 1959, he began farming on his own, including raising sheep, cattle, and hogs.
In the spring of 1973, the love of livestock and pasture ground led Nels to the Stockholm area. He purchased the farm near Stockholm in 1980 and remained there for the rest of his life.
In 1981, he was blessed to be united in marriage to Mildred Montney in Watertown, SD. Nels and Millie worked side by side and enjoyed 42 years of marriage. Nels was a man with a big heart, and he always enjoyed having coffee and visiting with friends, neighbors, and family. He especially enjoyed his weekly trips to the sale barn, and rarely came home with an empty pick up.
In late October of 2023, Nels became a resident of the care center in Milbank, SD. After a week in the hospital in Watertown, SD, Nels passed to his eternal home.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Millie; four brothers including George Ransom, Ray (Delores) Ransom, Earl (Linda) Ransom, and Tom (LeAnn) Ransom; four sisters including Emily Van Hunnick, Mary Cronin, Kathy (Steve) Goodell, and Ruth (Larry) Krie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Nels in death are his parents, two brothers-in-law, Clayton Van Hunnick and Ron Cronin; and one sister-in-law, Joann Ransom.
