A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date by the family.
Mary L. “Marylu” Johnson-Luther was born on May 19, 1961 to Florence L. and Dale C. Johnson in De Smet S.D. She grew up on the family farm with 6 siblings. She attended school in De Smet and graduated from high school there. She attended Black Hills State University in Spearfish SD for a time, then decided to venture out into the world to get some experience in other places. After visiting Alaska, California and a few other places Marylu returned to SD and attended the University of South Dakota where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in accounting. She spent several years traveling around the country working as an auditor before returning to De Smet and settling down again. She was joined by her fiancé James Luther, they married and established a home near Lake Thompson in Kingsbury County. Some time after that she started working at Trustworthy Hardware in De Smet where she remained for quite a few years.
Marylu enjoyed reading, wood carving, quilting, and riding horses. Some of our most enjoyable times were out riding horses, even if it was snowing. Marylu enjoyed humor. She could often be heard giggling with someone, and joking and laughing with the boss at the hardware store was a common scenario observed by patrons.
Marylu was also a very giving and generous person. She spent years taking care of our aging parents and her husband when his health declined. If someone in the family needed some help she stepped up. She gave to the community, and today continues to give to the community.
She is survived by one sister Rebecca Deppen (Craig), brothers Dave Johnson (Diane), Tim Johnson and Tony Johnson; sister-in-law Angie Johnson and brother-in-law Tony Oltman; one aunt Margaret Johnson; nephews Allen, Trent and Shaun Hof, Orion Johnson, Wylie and Mitchell Oltman; nieces Gretchen Lambrecht, BreAnne Johnson and Addie Johnson. She is also survived by many great nieces and nephews, 1 great great niece and 1 great great nephew. Marylu is survived by many cousins, some whom she has been very close to, and 3 step children; Jamie Sykes, Tracy Calder and Robert E. Luther.
She was preceded in death by her husband James R. Luther, parents Dale C. and Florence L. Johnson, one brother Dan C. Johnson and one sister Wendy M. Johnson.
