Mary Widman, age 86, of De Smet, SD, passed away Friday, August 18, 2023, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 25, 2023, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in De Smet, SD. Father Terry Weber will officiate with music provided by Jayne Pommer as organist and Kathryn LaMont as vocalist. Active pallbearers will be Scott Pirlet, Ross Pirlet, Matt Peckenpaugh, Tony Peckenpaugh, Daniel DeDeyne, and Brad DeDeyne with honorary pallbearers being Mary’s grandchildren. The service will be livestreamed via the Crawford-Osthus website.
Burial at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Cemetery in De Smet, SD, following the service.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Home in De Smet, SD.
Mary Anne Widman was born on December 12, 1936, to Francis and Loretta (Callahan) Peckenpaugh in the township of Matthews, SD. She graduated from De Smet High School in 1955, after which she worked at Kingsbury Electric. On December 28, 1957, Mary and Roger Widman were married in Carthage, SD. They had two children, David and Denise.
Mary was a dedicated homemaker and famous for her homemade buns. She was also a devoted member of the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church where she served on the altar society and cemetery board. In her community, Mary contributed as a 4-H leader and member of the Neighborhood Ladies’ Aid.
Mary is survived by her husband, Roger; children: David (Saleana) Widman and Denise (Gary) Osvog; brothers, Jim Peckenpaugh and Bob (Nancy) Peckenpaugh; sisters: Helen Heiter, Margaret (James) Mourek, Janice (Alan) Serfling, and Patricia Peckenpaugh; grandchildren: Andrew (Christine) Widman, Austin (Andrea) Widman, Allie (Nick) Wroblewski, Gavin (Rachel) Osvog, and Garrett (Jenn) Osvog; great-grandchildren: Reese, Evan, Vance, William, Grayson, and Kaden; brother-in-law, Ben Widman; and sisters-in-law, Val (Rog) Pirlet and Vicki (Greg) Anderson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Loretta (Callahan) Peckenpaugh; brothers: William, Doug, and Tom Peckenpaugh; brother-in-law, Jim Heiter; sister-in-law, Lois Widman; and nieces, Stephanie and Angie.
