Marlin Arnold Berger, 92, of Watertown, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2025. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Marlin will be remembered for his boundless generosity, warm smile, and the deep, genuine care he showed to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Born on March 12, 1933, in Watertown to his loving parents, Amy and Magnus, Marlin grew up with a strong sense of community and family. He attended Summit High School, where he excelled on the basketball court—a sport he remained passionate about for the rest of his life. After graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
On June 13, 1954, Marlin married the love of his life, Vaughn Frankenhoff. Their marriage of more than 71 years was a true partnership—built on love, laughter, and shared values. Together, they created a home filled with warmth, hospitality, and enduring memories. Marlin’s pride in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was unmistakable, and he celebrated their accomplishments as if they were his own.
Marlin was a dedicated businessman, owning and operating Berger Oil Company in Rosholt and New Effington. After retiring, he embraced life’s simple pleasures: taking care of the dog, fishing, jigsaw puzzles, Wii bowling, and especially his passion for coin collecting. His fascination with coins became a lifelong joy—not just a hobby, but a way to connect with others. He loved helping people discover the value of their collections and took special care in building collections for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was also a co-founder of the Kampeska Coin and Stamp Club.
A man of deep faith, Marlin was a longtime member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of the American Legion. His life was one of quiet service, humble devotion, and ever-present kindness.
Marlin is survived by his beloved wife, Vaughn; his son, Joel (Charles Mooney); his daughter, Cami (Todd Gottsleben); his granddaughters, Kelci (Jeremy Boniface) and Kali (Brett Denman); and his great-grandchildren, Brayden, Kinsley, Decker, Kashton, and Kollyns.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Amy (Abraham) and Magnus Berger; his brother, Melvin Berger; and his nephew, Daryle Berger.
