Marinus Samuel Verhey Jr., age 79, of Arlington, SD, passed away on Monday, October 9, 2023, at his residence. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 16, 2023, at Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Arlington. Pastor Seth Moan will officiate. Music will be provided by Shirlee Olson as organist. The family is requested to meet at the church on Monday by 10:30 a.m. for a prayer service. This service will be live streamed via our website.
Visitation will be at the Johnson-Henry Funeral Chapel in Arlington on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Monday.
Military honors will be conducted by Military Funeral Honors team of the SD Army National Guard. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in rural Salem at a later date. Honorary Urn bearers will be Virchow Farms.
Marinus was born July 26, 1944 at LeMars, Iowa to Marinus Samuel Sr. and Egbertha Johanna (Dykhuizen) Verhey. Jr. attended country school near Rutland, SD. He married Bonnie Williams July 18, 1966 at DeSmet, SD. They made their home on a farm just outside of Lake Preston until 1972. They moved to Hetland and then to Arlington in 1988.
Jr. served two years in the Army. During this time he was deployed to Korea, where he became a Truck Vehicle Mechanic and was decorated as Expert Rifleman.
Jr. spent his life enjoying mechanics for many businesses, friends and farmers. Prior to retirement he spent many years working at Virchow’s Farms.
After Retirement he enjoyed spending his time with his family. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were his life.
Jr. is survived by his daughter, Michele (Wayne) Block of Arlington, SD; three granddaughters, Kayla Thompson, Lake Preston, SD, Kristen (Justin) Longville, Lake Preston, SD, Kari Williams (Andrew Ellis) Arlington, SD; two step grandsons, John Block, Wentworth, SD, Anthony Block, Wentworth, SD; seven great-grandchildren, Reece Block, Jillian Block, Jordan Block, Elliott Cottier, Huntley Ellis, Owen Longville, Clayton Longville; one sister, Clara Downers, Madison, SD.
Jr. was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie (Williams) Verhey; his parents, Marinus Sr. and Egbertha Verhey; sister, Dorothy Johnson; brothers, Donald Verhey, Bert Verhey and Joey Verhey.
