Marian Elda Soma

Funeral services for Marian Soma age 97, of Oldham, will be 11:00 AM Friday, May 10, 2024 at the Oldham Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Oldham Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 hours prior to services on Friday. Marian Soma passed away peacefully on Saturday May 4th at Pelican Shores in Alexandria MN under the loving care of Hospice and the Pelican Shores staff. Arrangements have been entrusted to Johnson-Henry/Crawford Osthus Funeral Home of Arlington, Lake Preston, Oldham.

Marian Elda Jensen was born August 20,1926 in Lake Preston, SD to Jens K and Olga (Peterson) Jensen. The second of three children, she shared many fond memories of growing up on the family farm surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins. She was baptized and confirmed at the Oldham Lutheran Church. She attended Oldham High School graduating with the class of 1944. Following high school she moved to Sioux Falls, SD to attend beauty school.

Marian married Richard O. Soma on June 13,1948 at the Oldham Lutheran Church. The couple lived and worked in Sioux Falls before moving to the farm west of Oldham raising their three children. Once the children were in school Marian began working at the Lake Preston Nursing Home as a CNA/Med Aid. She was a dedicated, hardworking, kind and loving caregiver for over 40 years.

She found pleasure in baking, gardening and caring for her yard and home. She made every holiday gathering special and always looked forward to spending time with her family.

Marian is survived by her daughter, Shari (Scott) Lee, daughter-in-law, Marge Soma, sister, Nancy (John) Kleinjan, sisters-in-law, Betty Jensen and Betty (Dennis) Jorgenson, brother-in-law, Arvin (Joann) Soma, Seven grandchildren, David (Kori) Soma, Jennifer (Brandon) Reidel, Tara (Justin) Holman, Josh (Steph) Wittrock, Tyler (Jennifer Villanueva) Soma, Lexi Soma, and Christian (Madelyn Deknikker) Soma. 18 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

Marian was preceded in death by, her parents, her husband, Richard, sons, Rick and Darwin, brother, Don, daughter in-law, Susan Soma, son-in-law, Jeff Wittrock and infant great granddaughter Kirsta.

After a lifetime of determined independence she relied on the compassionate care of staff for the last few years of her life. Not one to complain she was gracious and kind to the end. She will be deeply missed.
