Margaret Johnson

Margaret Johnson, age 86, of De Smet, SD, passed away on Monday, January 5, 2026, at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in De Smet, SD.

Celebration of Life will be held by the family at a later date.

She was born on December 2, 1939, to the late Orville and Blanche (Green) Apland and grew up on the family farm near De Smet, SD. After graduating from De Smet High School she attended college at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, earning her nursing degree.  She married Kermit Johnson on August 2, 1961, and they spent the first several years of their life together in Hudson, WI, where she worked as a Registered Nurse.  In 1974, they moved back to the Apland family farm.  She continued her nursing career at De Smet Memorial Hospital until retiring after 35+ years of nursing. After her husband Kermit passed away she was lucky enough to meet Doug Lyon and they were partners for many years, traveling and making friends wherever they went. She was very creative and loved gardening, sewing, baking and taking care of those around her.  

Grateful to have shared her life are her children Karmen (Wade), Mike (Laurie), Matt (Ivette), her partner Doug, her brother Jim, her sister Kitty, 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, extended family members and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Kermit, 2 brothers-in-law and her parents.
