Lynn Haug Obituary

Lynn Wayne Haug, age 78, passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2020, after a February diagnosis of late stage cancer, at Avantara Care Center in Lake Norden, SD. A family interment was held at Hamlin Reformed Cemetery on Monday, March 23, 2020, with Pastor David Patterson of the Lake Norden Trinity Lutheran Church who officiated. A memorial service will be held at a later date due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Lynn was born on February 9, 1942, in Estelline, SD, to Floyd and Gladys (Somsen) Haug. He was baptized and confirmed in the Hamlin Reformed Church near Castlewood, SD. He grew up in the Hidewood Hills near Clear Lake, SD, attended Plainview country school and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1960. He attended General Beadle State, then SDSU, where he earned both his Bachelor's degree in Education and Master's degree in Administration.

He married Lillian Carol Uhrich on June 6, 1965, in Mitchell, SD. They were blessed to have raised four children. In 1972 they moved to Lake Norden, SD, where Lynn was an active member in the community. He was a volunteer member of the Lake Norden Ambulance squad. Lynn and Lillian were members of the Lake Norden Trinity Lutheran Church. Lynn began his teaching career at Mount Pleasant country school by Brandt, SD, followed by teaching positions in Florence and Madison, SD. He served as principal for Lake Norden Elementary, as well as, Florence, Waverly, Summit and Gary, SD. He later worked as a sales representative for J&R Distributing, McFleeg Feeds and Legend Seeds. He owned Dakota Hideaway & Hunting Excursions and year after year enjoyed guiding pheasant hunters, many who became special friends.

He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, farming, as well as, playing cards and pool. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a fan of baseball. He will be remembered as a generous, kind-hearted and loving man.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Lillian, of nearly 55 years, his children: Stuart (Leah) Haug of Bryant, SD, Marcia (Don) Jones of Harrisburg, SD, Gordon (Monique) Haug of Castlewood, SD, and Kelly (Amy) Haug of Castlewood, SD; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Wanda (Richard) Payant, of Castlewood, SD; one brother, Mike (Jean) Haug of Castlewood, SD; aunt and uncle, Donna (Somsen) and Robert Raasch of Castlewood, SD, and many deeply loved relatives and friends who he has impacted as a great teacher and provider.

Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Gladys (Somsen) Haug and his great grandson, Harlyn Smith.
