LaVonne was born on January 21, 1934, to Claus and Grace (West) Engels, in Castlewood, SD. She attended high school through the 9th grade then moved to Watertown and worked at a local dime store. As an adult she received her GED which she took great pride in this accomplishment. On November 10, 1960, LaVonne was united in marriage to Leonard Splinter in Watertown. The couple raised five children. Her strong will and caretaker tendencies have been the glue that kept her family together and these traits were passed down to her children. She was a stay-at-home mom until all of her children were in school. She then started her career working at Minnesota Rubber, where she worked for 25 years. She also achieved her goal by getting her realtor license.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. Lavonne enjoyed reading, bird watching, puzzles and collecting Beanie Babies. Her most special times were spent with her grandchildren.

LaVonne is survived by her children: Debra (Rick) Horton of Watertown, SD, Cheryl (Don) Meyer of Watertown, SD, Lori (Roger) Rust of Goodwin, SD, Karen Hemiller of Watertown, SD, and Steve (Beverly) Splinter of Watertown, SD; nine grandchildren: Christina, Brad (Brandy), Travis (Meagan), Sara (Jeremy), Nathan (Amanda), Nicholas (Samantha), Jamie (Ben), Bryce (Stacey), and Amy; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Curt Engels of Portland, OR; and one sister-in-law, Barb Splinter of MN.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, on November 19, 2020; one daughter, Ladonna; one grandson, Scottie; her parents; one brother, Kenny; one sister, Stella; seven brothers-in-law; and six sisters-in-law.
