Kenneth Duane Biteler, age 79, of De Smet, SD, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at Good Samaritan Center in De Smet. Visitation will be Monday, February 23, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Home in DeSmet.
Born on December 28, 1946, in Brookings, SD, to Doyal and Evelyn (Beyer) Biteler. Ken grew up with an appreciation for the land. After graduating from Egan High School in 1965, he attended South Dakota State University, earning his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1970. Ken dedicated his professional life to the Farmers Home Administration, serving the agricultural community. Following early retirement, Ken didn’t slow down; he became a neighborhood handyman, finding purpose in fixing things, mowing yards, and shoveling snow.
On April 20, 1974, he married Ila Tande. Ken took on the role of father to Ila’s daughter, Lynell. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Austin (Karlie) Gehm, Jordynn (Dustin Hand) Gehm, and Katelynn Gehm, and his three great-grandchildren, with a fourth arriving soon.
He is also survived by his sister, Arlys (Ron) Janssen; niece, Tara (Craig) Kuck; nephew, Shane Janssen.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ila; parents, Doyal and Evelyn.
In honor of the MANY medical calls and compassionate assistance provided to Ken over the years, the family request that memorials be directed to the De Smet Rescue, PO Box 94, De Smet, SD 57231. Ken’s family is forever grateful to the rescue team for being a steady and familiar presence in their time of need.
