Kathryn E. Taken, age 81, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2015, at a care center in Watertown.
She was the widow of Dale Taken.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 6, 2015, at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Watertown.
Rev. Steven Bailey will officiate. Music will be provided by Bruce Reinhardt as organist with congregational singing. The family is requested to meet at the church on Friday by 10:30 a.m. for a prayer service.
Visitation will be at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Friday.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown.
Honorary pallbearers will be all of Kathryn's granddaughters. Active pallbearers will be: Chad Schnackenberg, Jay Roberts, Chris Taken, Eric Henkensiefken, Ryan Ruhr and Cody Taken.
Kathryn was born on December 5, 1933, in Deuel County, SD, to Casper and Bertha (Bruns) Niemann.
She graduated from Castlewood High School in 1952.
On July 18, 1952, Kathryn married Dale Taken at Warroad, MN. She lived on her parents' farm for one year while Dale served in England.
The couple moved to Watertown in 1953 and Kathryn started working for the Watertown School System.
She later worked at the Drake Motor Inn, where she worked for 37 years.
She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, the church guild and the widows' club.
Kathryn enjoyed knitting, ceramics and playing cards and Bingo, which she frequently won.
She also enjoyed square dancing and helping Dale in his wood shop.
Kathryn loved spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Kathryn is survived by her four children: Allen "Al" (Barb) Taken of Watertown, Bert (Kevin) Wolf of Portland, OR, Kathy (Frank) Northrup of Wood Village, OR, and Doug (Laurie) Taken of Watertown; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three brothers: Jurgen (Jeanette) Niemann of Clear Lake, SD, Henry (Judy) Niemann of Kranzburg, SD, and Leo (Arla) Niemann of Clear Lake, SD; two sisters: Henrietta (Andy) Molengraaf of Volga, SD, and Judy (George) Harbolt of Wichita, KS; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale, in December of 2010; two great-grandchildren; her parents; and one sister, Lena Toering.
