She was born on January 13, 1931, to Andrew and Clara Andersen. She lived on the family farm near Dell Rapids until 1938. Then they moved to a farm South of Elkton. She attended country school for a while, then went to Elkton High School until she graduated in 1948. She attended Beadle College in Madison for twelve-week teaching course. She then taught at Jodozi School near Oldham, SD, for one year. Then taught at Gruenhagen & Becker country schools near Oldham.
It was when Joyce was teaching at Becker school she met the love of her life, Lowell Becker. They were married on December 26, 1949. They resided on the Becker Family Farm. While on the farm she helped Lowell farm, milked cows, and run her own upholstery shop. With Lowell’s passing in 1999, she continued to run the farm and her upholstery shop, with the family doing the farming. She continued to live on the family farm until she moved to Arlington in 2019. In 2025, with failing health she moved to Edgewood Assisted Living in Brookings, then to the Neighborhoods on Brookveiw until her passing. She was a devoted member of the Oldham Lutheran Church.
