Josephine Slominski Obituary

Josephine M. Slominski, age 84, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at the local hospital. After a long courageous battle with cancer, God has called Josephine home. She was the widow of Leo Slominski. Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2019, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel. Rev. Janet Miller will officiate. Music will be provided by Marcia Jelsma as organist with Becky Sprouse as soloist. The family is requested to meet by 12:30 p.m. at the chapel on Monday for a family prayer service. Visitation will be at the chapel on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and prior to the service on Monday. Josephine was born on June 3, 1935, to Joseph and Bessie (Eckman) Penney, in DeSmet, SD. On February 11, 1958, Josephine was united in marriage to Leo Slominski in Hamlin County.

In 1963, Josephine, her husband Leo, and Leo's brother, Joseph, owned and operated a used car business and the Dun Dee Furniture Company. In November of 1972, the family purchased Shields Wool and Fur Company, which was renamed L&J Wool and Furs. The wool and fur business was very special to her. Josephine also worked at Quadee, Prairie Lakes Healthcare Systems and Walmart. Leo preceded her in death on April 28, 2004. Josephine was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, doing art and spending as much time as she could outside. She also enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Josephine is survived by her children, Reena Slominski (Jack Aleff) of Watertown, SD, Minta Auten of Sedalia, MO, Effie Slominski and Linda Slominski (Gustavo Rodriguez), both of Watertown, SD; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, John (Susan) Penney of Groshen, IN and Wayne (Carol) DeVries of Watertown, SD; and her family friend, Brenda Glover of Watertown, SD. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; her parents; her son, Clayton; and her brother, James. The family prefers memorials to be directed to Prairie Center at Avera McKennan Foundation, P.O. Box 5045 Sioux Falls, SD 57117, or a cancer care organization of your choice.
