John Gustafson Obituary
John H. Gustafson, age 73, of Hayti, SD, passed away on December 7, 2018 at the hospital in Redwood Falls, MN. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at New Hope Lutheran Church in rural Hayti. Rev. Randy Eisenbeisz will officiate. Music will be provided by Helen Prouty as organist. The family is requested to meet at the church on Wednesday by 10:30 a.m. for a prayer service.
Visitation will be at the New Hope Lutheran Church in rural Hayti on Tuesday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and prior to the services at the church on Wednesday.
Burial will be at New Hope Lutheran Cemetery in rural Hayti. Honorary pallbearers will be all of John's friends and co-workers at Cross Country Freight. Active pallbearers will be Tigh Gustafson, John M. Gustafson, Scott Hookie, Jerry Feyereisen, Jamie Gustafson, Todd Johnson, Kyle Hvam and Pat Ingles.
John was born on August 13, 1945 to Herbert and Bernice (Isaacson) Gustafson. After graduating from Bryant High School in 1963, John attended General Beadle College in Madison, SD before barber school. John married Cheryl Anderson on December 30, 1965 at New Hope Lutheran Church. John and Cheryl lived in Pierre and Madison where John continued barbering. John and Cheryl then moved to their farm in Hayti. John loved farming, and also began trucking for Cross Country Freight, where he was currently working until his passing.
John drove school bus for many years for the Hamlin School District. He was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church. John enjoyed instructing 4-H shooting sports, watching sports at all levels, and visiting with anyone. He was a hunter and fisherman, and greatly enjoyed when all his family could get together.
John is survived by his wife of nearly 53 years, Cheryl, of Hayti; his children: John M. (Chelsie) Gustafson, of Hayti, Alisa (Rick) Miller, of Medford, MN, Shalley (Kyle) Hvam, of Sugar Hill, GA, Josie (Gary) Verkuilen, of Wittenberg, WI, and Tigh Gustafson of Hayti; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his brother, Raymond (Darlene) Gustafson, of Spirit Lake, IA; and his sister, Judy (Don) Hookie, of Centerville, SD. John was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Bernice.
