Joan Stein Obituary
Joan C. Stein, age 92, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2018, at a local care center. She was the widow of Loren Stein. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 9, 2018, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel. Fr. Michael Wensing will officiate. Visitation will be prior to the service at the chapel on Friday. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery. Joan was born on April 25, 1926 at Luther Hospital in Watertown to Katherine (Vellare) and Leo Craney. She was third generation French and Irish, living through "World Wars" and the "Great Depression". Joan attended Immaculate Conception grade school and graduated from Watertown High School in 1944. Following graduation Joan worked for the Office of Price Administration in the Watertown Post Office. She then moved to Minneapolis, MN in 1945 and worked for Weyerhaeuser Lumber Co. as a secretary. After the war Joan returned to Watertown and married Loren Stein in 1946, and they raised three children, Paul, Kathy and Richard.
She worked for St. Ann's Hospital in Watertown as a Director of Public Relations and Volunteer Services, and was Co-chairman of a fund raising committee responsible for creating a "Juice Cart" service for patients and the "Karing Kapers Entertainment Show".
Joan later worked in sales at Bonnie's Boutique for 14 years. Joan loved her work along with playing the piano, raising her children and cooking. She was called Go Go by her family and friends. Her special love was for her grandchildren. When Loren became ill she cared for him for several years at home until his death on May 31, 2008.
Joan is survived by her sons, Paul Stein and Richard (Julie) Stein; her son-in-law, Steve Horning; her grandchildren, Ted (Sara) Horning, Rebecca Stein and Austin Stein; and her great-grandchildren, Isabella and Brooklyn Horning.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Loren; her daughter, Kathy Horning; and her parents.
