Joan M. Sime

Joan M. Sime, age 64, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026, at a local care facility. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown. A lunch will be held after the service at the Revillo Community Center in Revillo, SD.

Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, from 5-7 p.m.

Joan was born on May 30, 1961, in Madison, MN, to Alvin and Grace (Sjolie) Schmieding. She graduated from Bellingham High School in Minnesota in 1979 and attended Lake Area Tech. After school she went to work at Big Stone Cheese Factory.

Joan met Jeff Sime in the spring of 1985 and they married on December 28, 1985. The couple moved to Webster, SD, where she worked at the Bethesda nursing home. They then moved to Wallace, SD, and lived there for a few years.

In 1989 Joan and Jeff moved to Watertown where she worked and was working for Midcom until after her son was born in 2001. She loved her role as a mother as it made her life complete. After Midcom she worked a few places before finally finding her calling as the cook at the Salvation Army. Due to a decline in health she had to step down and retire in 2019.

Joan loved to read and would do crafts and sewing. She was a phenomenal baker and cook, loving the holidays and family gatherings.

Joan is survived by her husband, Jeff, of Watertown; her son Tucker of Fairbanks, AK; two sisters: Patti Schafer of Milbank, SD, Gail Sime of Watertown, SD, four brothers: Tom (Earlene) Schmieding of Marietta, MN, Darroll (Connie Lacek) Schmieding of Astoria, SD, William Schmieding of Revillo, SD, Alvin Schmieding of Strandburg, SD; brother-in-law, Trent Sime of Revillo; three nieces: Hunter Skorczewski, Kenzi (Brendan) Evjen of Watertown, SD, Leslie Hoium of Milbank, SD; four nephews: Greg (Holly) Schafer of Brookings, SD, Brian (Lauren) Schafer of Garnett, KS, Jamie (Jessica) Schafer of Ankeny, IA, Carter Sime of Revillo, SD, and many great nieces and nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents: Paul and Regina Schmieding and Alfred and Gladys Sjolie, her brother, Alton Schmieding and sister, Sharon Street.
