Jean Joylene Steinmetz, age 87, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Monday, September 20, 2021, at a local care center. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 27, 2021, at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. Rev. Paul Janke will officiate. Music will be provided by Carol Janke as organist. The service will be Live-Streamed via St. Martin’s Lutheran Church website and the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel Facebook Live.
Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Sunday from 2-4 p.m.
Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery in South Shore, SD. Pallbearers will be Jacob Steinmetz, Jonathan Steinmetz, Cortez Steinmetz, Ferdy Zirbel, David Zirbel, and Jevon Zirbel.
Jean was born on April 4, 1934, in South Shore, SD, to Ferdinand and Hilda (Kaaz) Zirbel. She attended a country elementary school near Summit, SD, and attended high school for two years in Summit.
Jean worked at the Pantry Café in Watertown where she met Alrine Steinmetz. They were married on July 3, 1954. They made their home in Watertown, where Jean stayed home until her boys were in school. She worked at Osco Drug; then she was employed at Pamida from the day they opened until they closed. After that, she worked at various retail stores until her retirement at age 72. Jean and Alrine were married for over 50 years until his death on April 10, 2005. She married Lee Hansen on December 30, 2006. Lee died on April 10, 2017.
She was a member of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church. Her faith was very important to her, and she was very involved in church choir, Ladies Club, and Ladies Aid. She enjoyed cooking and baking, especially Sunday dinners for her family. Jean enjoyed socializing, dancing, and playing cards, especially pinochle. She was involved in Sweet Adelines and the Red Hat society. She was very active, and always on the go. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as all of her family.
Jean is survived by son Allen (MarKay) Steinmetz, Keanna and Vanessa; daughter-in-law Tammy Steinmetz, Andrea (Micah) Miller and Alicia; son Gary (Suzanne) Steinmetz, Jacob (Ashley) Steinmetz, Jonathan (Chelsea) Steinmetz, Cortez (Jackie) Steinmetz, 9 great-grandchildren, one stepbrother, Arnold (Barb) Tesch of Kent, WA, one stepsister, Lois (Darrell) Hildebrant of Brookings, SD, and one sister-in-law, Esther Zirbel.
Jean was preceded in death by her husbands, Alrine Steinmetz and Lee Hansen, one son, Craig Steinmetz, one brother, Dale Zirbel, and one sister, Ivis Sieveke.
Memorials may be given to St. Martin’s “Telling the Next Generation”.
