Jay Peder Bogen was born November 27, 1948, in Minneapolis, MN, to Doris Johnson.

Shortly after birth, he was adopted by Clifford and Beatrice (Nelson) Bogen and spent the first several years of his life in Hendricks with his parents and a large extended family.

He attended country school for part of his elementary years.

The family moved to Mankato, MN, in 1960, where Jay acquired his first job at the Cliff Kyes Motel at the age of about 14.

Jay graduated from Mankato High School in 1966 and attended Minnesota State University, Mankato (then Mankato State College), graduating in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in business.

He was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity and chair of the first MSU-Mankato college-wide book exchange.

While in college, Jay met Susan Graham and they were married on September 26, 1970.

Following graduation, Jay worked for JC Penney Corporation at the Milwaukee Distribution Center, Coast-to-Coast Stores at their Minneapolis and Kansas City distribution centers and for Arrowhead Seeds in Watertown. Jay also worked for First Federal Bank as a financial representative.

He opened his own insurance agency in 1985 and ran it until his retirement in 2011.

Jay was the first person in South Dakota to be a certified Long Term Care Insurance specialist, an achievement of which he was very proud.

Jay was a member of the Army Reserves in Minnesota and Wisconsin from 1970-76, and SD National Guard 1742nd Transportation Unit from 1989-1996. He served in the first Gulf War in Saudi Arabia and Iraq and was a lifetime member of the VFW.

In 2012, he moved to Madison, WI, to be closer to family and was soon after diagnosed with a rare neurodegenerative disorder, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), for which there is no treatment or cure.

Jay loved Watertown and South Dakota and was very active in the community. He served on the Chamber of Commerce board and on the finance committee for many years and received their ‘Volunteer of the Year' award.

He was a former member of Rotary, Kiwanis and the Elks.

He was active in the First Congregational United Church of Christ, serving on many boards and as moderator. Jay also served on the Salvation Army board. He was also an Independent Presidential Elector for Ross Perot.

He loved riding his Honda Gold Wing; taking trips to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Las Vegas, listening to big band music, vintage cars and car shows, watching action movies and Springer Spaniels (especially his dog, Addie, and his daughter's dog, Olive).

He had strong opinions about many things and never shied away from sharing them.

He also enjoyed the simple things in life like fresh baked cookies, homemade casseroles and playing cards with his family.

He loved to spend his weekends washing and waxing his cars, especially his 1973 yellow VW Beetle convertible and his two Cadillac Fleetwood Broughams.

Jay is survived by his children: son, David (Sarah) Bogen and daughter, Amy Bogen; his grandchildren, Garrison and Dinah Bogen, both of Madison, WI; his brother, Paul (Pat) Bogen, of Suwanee, GA; his former wife, Susan Bogen, Madison, WI.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family requests memorials be made to the Watertown Community Foundation.
