In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the De Smet Fire, Rescue, and Ambulance in Jim’s memory.
On July 24, 1944, James Maurice Farrell was born to Maurice and Helen Farrell in New Martinsville, West VA. Jim was raised in Powhatan, OH, where he worked alongside his father at the family’s car repair shop. Jim would go on to attend college and receive a degree in Engineering. As an engineer, he was able to travel for work before moving to De Smet where he became a staple in the community.
Jim owned and operated the local OK Ranch Hardware Store and later changed the name to Trustworthy Hardware for 42 years. Jim’s customers knew he was always up for a challenge and could fix or repair almost anything. Jim was very giving and extremely helpful to anyone who needed it. He was full of jokes, quick wit, and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Jim’s true passion was guns and ammunition- whether it be collecting or selling.
Jim was united in marriage to his best friend in 1999. Becoming a Papa changed his whole world and his grandchildren became a priority in his life. You could find him in a church pew, at the Oxbow, the Homestead, the shooting range, and many other places- always with a grandkid next to him.
Grateful for sharing in his life are Ron (Amy) Pasch of Cottage Grove, MN, and their children: Abigail and Max; Tamora German of Dunedin, FL, and her children: Allyn and Shaelynn Martens (Larry); Tanya Groft of Fargo, ND, and her children: Koby, Kyler (Kortni), and Keanna (Kevin); Becky (Brook) Stephens of Watertown, SD, and their children: Lance, Bryce, and Dylan (Faith); Rae Lynn (Lonnie) Geiman of De Smet, SD, and her children: Alexa, Kristina, and Kaleb Amundson; Roberta Elkins (Brien) of De Smet, SD, and her children: Kearra (Brandon), Koden (Harley), and Kendra.
Preceding him in death was his wife, Mary; parents, Maurice and Helen; and sister, Valerie.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel www.crawfordosthus.com
