Jim was born in Huron, SD to Louis LeVere Coughlin and Pearl Marjorie (Smith) Coughlin. Jim grew up on a farm near De Smet, SD with his five siblings. He attended De Smet High School and graduated with the class of 1978. Jim attended Lake Area Technical College where he studied Diesel Mechanics. He worked at O’Keefe Implement in De Smet for one year before getting married. Jim married Debby Baird on May 9, 1981, in Iroquois at the Trinity United Methodist Church. Jim and Debby lived and farmed in Iroquois, SD which included farming crop ground and feeding cattle. They also operated a seed corn business for 32 years with Jim’s father-in-law. Throughout their marriage Jim and Debby were blessed with three children – Lexi Johnson, Brittany Dixon and Alex Coughlin. Jim enjoyed hobbies such as bowling, playing co-ed softball and volleyball and spending time at the family lake cabin. As they raised their family, free time was spent attending multiple kids’ sporting and music events. Jim and Debby took over the seed corn business in 2012. With that business they were able to enjoy multiple trips. As grandkids came and grew, Jim and Debby enjoyed supporting them in their various activities. While we are all put on this earth for a purpose, Jim always stated that he was made to be a farmer so he could help feed the world.
Jim was blessed to have shared his life with his wife, Debby, for 42 years, his three children Lexi (Ray) Johnson, Brittany (Bryan) Dixon and Alex (Christa) Coughlin; his eight grandchildren: Connor, Breyten & Kiraley Johnson, Alexis, Aria & Ethan Dixon and Kenzie & Kalli Coughlin; his siblings: Susanne (Brad) Albrecht, John (Ralene) Coughlin, Sheila (Monte) Gummer and Shelly Soukup; sister-in-law, Susan Coughlin-Schmidt; and several nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Louis LeVere Coughlin and Pearl Marjorie (Smith) Coughlin; his brother, Joe Coughlin; and his niece Angie (Hofer) Brown.
