Harriette Walter Obituary

Funeral services for Harriette Akin Walter, age 88, of Redfield, SD, formerly Watertown, SD will be at 7:00 p.m on Friday, May 4, 2007 in the Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown, and at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2007 at the United Methodist Church, Redfield, SD. Pastor Kristi McLaughlin and Rev. Stephen Perry will officiate respectively. Harriette passed away on May 1, 2007 at a care center in Redfield. She was the widow of Clarence Walter and George Akin. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Redfield, SD. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Eastern Star Home. Active pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Music for the Friday service will be provided by Peggy Biswell, organist with Pastor Jim and Peggy Biswell, vocalists. Music for the Saturday service will be Lynn Flint, organist and Cindy Akin, soloist. Visitation will be in the Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown, SD on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday preceding services at the church. The family is requested to meet at the church by 10:30 a.m. for a prayer service. Harriette was born on May 27, 1918 at South English, IA to Richard and Lena (Richardson) Stoner. She spent her childhood in the Orient-Redfield, SD area. She graduated from Redfield High School. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree at Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD; where she graduated in 1968. She then taught around the Redfield area. Harriette married George Akin on December 24, 1941 at Orient, SD. George passed away in 1960. She then married Clarence Walter on July 11, 1971 at Redfield, SD. The couple lived in Clear Lake, SD where she taught in Gary, SD until her retirement in 1983. Clarence passed away in 2005. Harriette was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Congregational Church in Watertown, the Retired Teachers' Association, the Royal Neighbors, and a former member of the United Methodist Church in Redfield. She enjoyed playing cards, Scrabble, reading, Bible Study, and visiting with friends and family. Harriette especially enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. Harriette is survived by her children: Jeannie and her husband, Jim Lutz, of Gary, SD, Judy and her husband, Don Witte, of Aberdeen, SD, Dick and his wife, Sharal Akin, of Gary, SD, Roland and his wife, Maeve King Walter, of Aberdeen, SD, Joan and her husband, Joe Schaffer, of Fairmont, MN, Joy Kehrwald of Ipswich, SD, and Jill and her husband, Jim Squires of Redfield, SD; one sister, Shirley Sanger of Zell, SD; twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two husbands, her parents, and one brother, Wayne.
