Harriet E. McFerran Bevers, age 96, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at the local hospital. She was the widow of James Bevers.
Private family services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel. There will be a public Live-Stream on our website. Pastor Cheryl Rondeau-Bassett will officiate. Music will be provided by Marcia Jelsma as organist with Judy Everson as soloist.
The family is requested to be at the chapel on Tuesday by 9:30 a.m. for a prayer service.
There will be no visitation.
Burial will be at Our Saviors Lutheran Cemetery in rural Henry, SD. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Grace Lutheran Quilting Group. Active Pallbearers will be: Mike (Angie) Bevers, Brent (Bobbi) Bevers, Eric (Mandy) McCarlson, John (Kathy) Rennie, Emily (Roberto) Correa, Stacy Swails, Marie (Matt) Hlavacek and Brady (Deanne) Rennie.
Harriet was born April 14, 1924 in rural Henry, SD to Thomas John and Ella (Nelson) McFerran. On December 16, 1944 she was married to Seaman 2nd Class James M. Bevers at Grace Lutheran Church, Watertown, SD by Pastor Berlie R. Biorn. She attended rural school #9 Happy Home, and graduated from Watertown High School with the class of 1942. She then attended summer school at Madison Normal to obtain a certificate for teaching in rural Codington County. Jim was relocated to Kitsap Lake, WA for a short furlough so Harriet joined him in Bremerton, WA. While there she worked at Singer Sewing Company. After moving back to Watertown, she worked at The Fashion, and taught three terms at rural school. She also worked at Thoro Dry Cleaners and Dorothy's Furs and Fashions doing alterations. In 1980 she opened Harriet's Alterations and was in business for 16 years. She volunteered for Grace Lutheran Quilters serving as their leader for 21 years. Before 1980 the Bevers were dairy farmers south of Henry, where they raised their four children and were active members of Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
Harriet was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the quilting club. She enjoyed reading the Bible and sewing. Harriet and James celebrated their 70th Anniversary on December 16, 2014, while Jim was in Jenkins Care Center. Jim passed away two weeks later. Harriet was the last descendent of the John McFerran family. She has no brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles or cousins left in that family.
Harriet is survived by her daughter, Elise McCarlson of Watertown, SD and her son, Kim (Roxanne) Bevers of Lake Norden, SD; her son-in-law, Alan Rennie of Henry, SD, her daughter-in-law, Connie (Steve) Lundholm of Watertown, SD; eight grandchildren: John (Kathy) Rennie, Brady (Deanne) Rennie, Stacy Swails, Eric (Mandy) McCarlson, Brent (Bobbi) Bevers, Emily (Roberto) Correa, Mike (Angie) Bevers and Marie (Matt) Hlavacek; 18 great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, Carl (Sharon) Bevers; and her sisters-in-law: Renetta McFerran, Mildred Brinkman and Jeann Bevers, all of Watertown, SD, Joyce (Howard) Gackie of Mesa, AZ, Dorothy McGillivary of Fargo, ND and Barbara Walklin of Mesa, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James; one son, William; one daughter, Kristine; one brother, Harley; four sisters, Ruth (John E.) Thomas, Esther (John) Nye, Vera (Lee) Bevers and Dora (William) Deberg; two special nephews, David and Kevin DeBerg; and a special family, nephews John and Sam and nieces Florence Nye and Glenda Bevers Boone.
