Greg was born to Donald and Arlis (Otten) Hentges on May 29, 1951. Greg married the love of his life, Tamara Nordquist, on November 29, 1991, in Watertown, SD.
To know Greg was to know strength, generosity, and an untamable love for the outdoors. Greg always had on his cowboy hat and boots. He was a rough and tough mountain man – most at peace deep in the Canadian bush at Lynn Lake, MB, setting up camp, spotting wildlife, cooking over an open flame, sleeping under the stars, and waking to the golden sunrise on his face. He found joy in the wild and simplicity in the rhythm of nature. If there was a lake or stream nearby, you could bet he was already casting a line, hoping for a walleye.
Greg had a way of making friends everywhere he went, from every walk of life. He never judged a book by its cover. As stubborn and tough as he was, he was also incredibly patient, deeply understanding, and always the first to lend a hand. He would drop anything to help someone in need. He could fix and repair anything. That was just who he was. Greg had worked for Yellow Freight for over 30 years before retiring in 2015.
Greg’s legacy isn’t just in the stories – it’s in the way we live moving forward. It’s in the campfires we sit around, the hikes we take, the mountains we breathe in, and the quiet moments we remember to just be. That’s where we’ll feel him most. That’s where he’ll always be.
Greg is survived by his wife, Tamara, of Castlewood, SD; children, son Levi Hentges, of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter Haley (Cameron) Pewe, of Castlewood, SD; son Dustin (Abby) Dravland, of Orange City, IA; 8 grandchildren: Ava, Faith, Liam, Cohen, Myles, Reese, Cora, and Colt; sisters Dixie (Jack) Gaikowski, of Tucson, AZ; Rita (Kenny) Marx, of Waubay, SD; Donnietta (Mike) Bernard, of Watertown, SD; Kelly (Ed) Robertson, of Watertown, SD; and Pam Keeble, of Waubay, SD; and brothers Kevin (Julie) Barse, of Waubay, SD; Mike (Laurie) Barse, of Sioux Falls, SD; Keith (Dawn) Barse, of Ethan, SD; and Farlin (Wendy) Barse, of Corisca, SD.
