Greg A Hammerstrom

Greg A. Hammerstrom, age 76, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Wednesday January 11, 2023, at Prairie Lakes Hospital. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m.  on Monday, January 16, 2023, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel  in Watertown.  Rev. Tom Christenson will officiate.  Music will be provided by A.J. Sherrill as organist. The memorial service will be live streamed via our website.

 Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown prior to services at the chapel on  Monday.

Burial will be at South Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Military honors will be conducted by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion,  Watertown, Post #750 of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Watertown, Funeral Honors Team of the U.S. Navy at the chapel.  Honorary Urnbearers will be Sean Tennis, Bryan Satter, Gary Gorrell, Brandon Lopez, and Abigail Gorrell.

Greg was born on March 4, 1946, in Hawarden, IA, to Robert and Muriel (Hoffman) Hammerstrom.  He attended Alcester High School in South Dakota and entered the US Navy in 1964.

On October 20, 1967, Greg married Judy Satter.  In 1972, he reenlisted into the US Navy and retired from US Navy in 2002, as an E7.  They then moved back to Watertown and went to work for the United States Postal Service, working bulk mail and passports until he retired in 2015.  The couple continued to make their home in Watertown.

He was a member of  LCOOR, Elks, Masons, Shriners, American Legion and VFW.  Greg enjoyed target shooting, bowling, building model ships, collecting coins, cooking and playing cards.  He will be missed for his fun stories and his wit.

Greg is survived by his wife, Judy of Watertown; two daughters: Heather (Gary) Gorrell of Manassas, VA, and Shannon Cornwell of Watertown, SD; two grandchildren: Brandon Lopez and Abigail Gorrell; two nephews: Eric Hammerstrom and Chris Hammerstrom; one niece, Amanda Hammerstrom; sister-in-law, Carol Hammerstrom of Rock Ledge, FL.

 Greg was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert Scott Hammerstrom.
