Gilbert Bunde Obituary
Rev. Gilbert C. Bunde, age 93, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2020, at the local hospital. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 27, 2020, at St. Martin's Lutheran Church. Pastor Keith Petersen will officiate. Music will be provided by Ellen Heisner as organist with David Boehnke as soloist as well as the Pastors Choir. The family is requested to meet at the church by 1:30 p.m. for a family prayer service. Funeral service will be live streamed.
Visitation will be on Sunday, July 26, 2020, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel from 2-4 p.m. and also prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be the 3rd Floor Staff at Jenkins Care Center and Pastor Scott Dempster. Active pallbearers are: Tylor Griffith, Chris Winge, Shane Bunde, Adam Bunde, Eric Negaard and Kyle Lenzner.
Gilbert was born on June 10, 1927, to Otto and Ida (Fromke) Bunde, in rural Watertown. He was raised on the family farm north of Watertown with his brothers and sister. Gilbert was Baptized and Confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church at Rauville, SD. After attending Germantown District #61 one room country school, he attended Dr. Martin Lutheran School at New Ulm, MN, graduating in 1945. Gilbert then attended North Western College in Watertown, WI and graduated in 1949, before graduating from the Seminary at Thiensville, WI in 1952.
On June 15, 1952, Gilbert was united in marriage to Hazelle Baerwaldt at the Browns Valley Zion Lutheran Church. His first call was to Crandon, Argonne & Hiles and was ordained and installed there by the Rev. Erwin Scharf. From there he served at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Shakopee, MN, Willow Lake Lutheran Church, Hague Lutheran Church and to Wellington Twp in Fairfax, MN. During his ministry he served on various church and synod boards. After retiring in 1995, they moved to Watertown to be closer to family. He also was a greeter at WalMart. Gilbert loved gardening and hunting, and especially spending time with his family and friends.
Gilbert is survived by his children: Brenda (Larry) Winge of Watertown, SD, Denise (Rick) Froke of Watertown, SD, Steve (Tracey) Bunde of Westland, MI, and Tammy (Jim) Hunter of Hayti, SD; his eight grandchildren; Christopher Winge, Erin (Kyle) Lezner, Tylor (Chelsea) Griffith, Amber (Eric) Negaard, Shane Bunde, Adam Bunde, Kaitlyn Bunde and Brooke Hunter; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his son; his parents; and his siblings.
