Ed Hoek, age 97, of De Smet, SD, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Society in De Smet. Memorial Services will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at the American Lutheran Church, De Smet, SD.
Visitation will be prior to services on Wednesday at the church.
Burial will be at the De Smet Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the De Smet American Legion Post #138. Pastor Nate Bendorf will officiate.
Ed was born on October 4, 1926, in Montrose, SD, to Adrian and Willimina (Veenvass) Hoek. Ed served in the National Guard.
On December 30, 1949, Ed married Marilyn Shultis, in Oldham, SD. The couple lived in Ramona, Oldham, and finally De Smet, SD, where they made their home and raised their kids. Ed opened Ed’s Standard Station and operated for 40 years. Ed and Marilyn worked together at the station, where they made many memories.
Marilyn passed away on July 17, 1993. Ed continued to make De Smet, SD, his home and be a member of the community. He was a devoted member of the American Lutheran Church. Ed also found friendship and laughter in his daily visits to the Cottage Inn Cafe, where he was a well-known member of the "Early to Bed, Early to Rise Club."
Ed was a man who thrived in the great outdoors, enjoying hunting and fishing whenever he could. His love for nature was matched by his commitment to conservation and by his active membership in Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited. However, the joy of Ed’s life was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was very proud to share his love of one-liner’s with everyone in his family.
Ed is survived by four children: Roberta (Ron) Hagen of Watertown, SD; Myrna Crook of St. Simons Island, GA; Mark (Jill) Hoek of Estelline, SD; and Brian (Cindy) Hoek of Carrolton, GA; eleven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; two sons, Brad and Paul Hoek; his parents; and three brothers, Leonard, Gene, and Donnie Hoek.
