Duane Maag Obituary

Duane D. Maag, age 60, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. Funeral Services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown. Pastor Steve Biswell will officiate.  Military funeral honors will be conducted by the Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion, Watertown and the Funeral Honors Team of the SD Army National Guard.

Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Saturday from 1-3 p.m.

Duane Daniel Maag, a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, partner, and friend passed away leaving behind a legacy of kindness, humor, and generosity that will not be forgotten.

Duane was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back and never hesitate to lend a hand to anyone in need. He had a gift for conversation — able to talk to anyone and everyone about just about anything — and he never missed the chance to share a joke, even if it was a little inappropriate at times. His laughter and warmth were constants in the lives of those who knew him.

He found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. Duane loved fishing and spending time in nature, where he felt most at peace, often watching for eagles and pausing to admire their majestic flight across the open sky. He was also a creative spirit, expressing himself through beautiful stained-glass pieces and, more recently, through his unique metal art creations. Whether he was crafting, casting a line, or hunting for a good bargain — which he almost always managed to find — Duane lived with a quiet curiosity and a deep appreciation for the world around him. He held a special fascination for trains; he could spot one from miles away and made sure everyone in the car knew it was coming, tracing the rail lines along every journey and sharing where they ran, as if each track carried its own story waiting to be told.

Those grateful for having shared his life include his partner, Kimberly Elliott; his children, Sherokee Maag (fiancé JD Jorgenson), Zara (Maag) and husband Francis Garcia, and Hunter Maag (fiancé Carly Reiter); and his grandchildren, Emilio and Sylvie Garcia.

He is also lovingly remembered by his bonus children, Nick Elliott; Stacy (Elliott) and husband Troy Range; and Dawn (Elliott) and husband Jeremy Boswell; as well as his grandchildren, Hunter Elliott, Raylynn Laible (fiancé JJ Reil), Riley Laible (fiancé Vincent Mitchell), Dawson Laible, EmmaLynn Elliott, Brady Boswell, and Mataya Boswell, and his great-grandchildren, Jaylin and Oakley Reil.

Duane is further survived by his best friend, cousin, and cohort (keep your hands and feet in the ride at all times) Mike Maag, along with many other relatives and dear friends whose lives he touched.

Duane will be remembered for his generous heart, his creative soul, and the joy he brought to those around him. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the countless memories shared by those who loved him.
