Doris E. Helbing

Doris Evelyn Helbing, age 93, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at Dougherty Hospice House as a result of a recent stroke.  Private family services will be held.

Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown.

Doris was born on May 17, 1929, in Stockholm, SD, to David and Leila (Larson) Nordquist.  She graduated from Strandburg High School in 1947.

On February 14, 1948, Doris married D. Lee Helbing at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. 

Doris worked at Sears Order Office, Herberger’s and Kreiser’s Drug Store for several years.  She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, where she served on several committees.  In recent years she became a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed playing cards with friends, bowling, dancing, making floral arrangements, and taking care of her many outdoor flowers.  She treasured spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  They always called her “Granny” and looked forward to getting treats.

Doris and her husband of fifty-two years wintered in Mission, TX, for ten years.  He passed away on their return home after their last year there in 2000.

Doris is survived by her daughters: Sandra (Garry) Dingsor of Ortley, SD, and Cindy (Herb) Skinner of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren: Sara (Brandon) Leslie of Aberdeen, SD, David (Angela) Dingsor of Sioux Falls, SD, Bryan (Jennifer) Dingsor of Watertown, SD, and Amy (Joe) Spahr of Brandon, SD; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Lee; parents, David and Leila Nordquist; brothers: Marlyn and Lyle Nordquist; brother-in-law, Jack Helbing; sisters-in-law: Mae Nordquist and Twyla Nordquist.
