It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Delaine Anna Hookie. She passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, at the age of 85.
A celebration of Delaine’s life will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Lake Preston Lutheran Church, Lake Preston, SD, with a visitation on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Home in Arlington, SD.
Born on May 13, 1940, in Oldham, South Dakota, Delaine was the cherished daughter of Ruben and Anna (Glaser) Olson. She grew up on the family farm near Oldham, where she attended country school and later graduated valedictorian from Oldham High School in 1958. Her academic excellence was a testament to her dedication and passion for learning, qualities that she carried throughout her life.
Delaine later welcomed three children, Ranae, Robin, and David with her first husband. A second chapter of love began with her marriage to Clarence Hookie in 1977, with whom she had another son, Rich. Clarence’s untimely passing in 1979 left a profound impact on Delaine, yet she continued to embody strength and resilience.
Delaine devoted over four decades of her life to serving the residents of Kingsbury Memorial Manor in Lake Preston, where her culinary skills and warm-hearted nature left an indelible mark. Her contributions as a cook went beyond preparing meals; she nourished the souls of those she served with kindness and compassion.
A devoted member of the Lake Preston Lutheran Church, Delaine’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. Her involvement in the church community was a reflection of her unwavering commitment to helping others and living a life filled with love and service.
Delaine’s spirit was as vibrant as her love for life. She found joy in crafting, thrifting, reading, and sharing her love for music and movies with family and friends. Her home was always filled with laughter and warmth, especially during holidays, where she delighted in cooking and decorating, creating unforgettable memories for her family.
Family was the heartbeat of Delaine’s existence. She was a devoted mother to her children, and an amazing grandmother to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mourning her passing are her children, Ranae (Phil) Williamson, Robin (Larry) Mortinsen, David (Bonnie) Dement, and Rich Hookie, her siblings, Darrell (Kate) Olson, Janice (Lee) Macke, Daniel Olson, and Judy Hookie, her beloved grandchildren, Chris (Nikole) Williamson, Kara (Travis) Baumtrog, Nikki Ruiz, Derek (Cassie) Mortinsen, and Tori (Clay) Droll, her cherished great-grandchildren, Sami, Mattilyn, Aiden, Clara, Logan, Riley, Jocelyn, Jericho, Chaz, Alex, Coraline, Lillian and Carter, as well as many nieces and nephews. Each of them carries a piece of her heart and the values she instilled.
Delaine was preceded in death by her parents, Ruben and Anna Olson; her father and mother-in-law, Charles and Elsie Hookie; her husband, Clarence Hookie; her brother, Morris Olson; her sisters-in-law, Elaine Olson, Pam Olson, Vera Loon, and Mary Hookie; and her brothers-in-law, Richard, Dale, Douglas, Darrell, and Donald Hookie and a son-in-law, Craig Williamson.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Bethel Assisted Living, Bethel Nursing Home, and St. Croix Hospice in Madison, SD, for their loving care of our mom. In remembering Delaine, we honor a life well-lived, filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family and community. Her legacy of kindness and joy will forever be cherished by all who knew her.
