David H. Heller, age 74, of De Smet, SD, passed away at his residence on May 26, 2024, after a short battle with cancer.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, May 31, 2024, at American Lutheran Church in De Smet, SD. Pastor Nate Bendorf will officiate with music provided by Mary Weerts as organist.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at American Lutheran Church in De Smet, SD.
David Henry Heller was born in Huron on June 27, 1949, to George and Lorene (Albrecht) Heller. He grew up south of De Smet in the Matthew Township where he spent his time around the farm. He learned to ride a horse early on and used his talent to break and train horses. In 1967, he graduated from De Smet High School and began his career as a lineman at the REA in De Smet.
Dave met Kathy (Price) after high school, and they were united in marriage on October 14, 1972. In November of that year they moved to Aberdeen, SD where Dave worked for Northwestern Public Service, and they raised three children: Dawn, Jon, and Jodi.
In 2006 Dave retired from Basin Electric and he and Kathy returned to De Smet. In his most recent years, he was a proud member of the IBEW Local Union #1593 and served his community as a board member of the Kingsbury REA.
Dave and Kathy started spending their winters in Arizona in 2013. Dave enjoyed sitting in the sun, learning new woodworking techniques, and grilling up dinner. In the summer months, Dave will always be remembered for keeping his lawn green, fishing, and working on new projects in the shop. His shop was always open for anyone to stop by.
He was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen, SD and American Lutheran Church in De Smet, SD. He enjoyed his Sundays as an usher making sure the lights were on and the candles lit.
Nothing brought a bigger smile to his face than spending time with his family, especially hanging out in the shop or around the yard with his grandsons.
David will be dearly missed by his wife of 51 years, Kathy, and their children Dawn (Chad Telford) Heller Telford, Jon (Jill Vosberg-Heller) Heller, and Jodi (Joe) Schwan; five grandsons: Levi Vosberg, Hayden and Jackson Heller, Anthony Garcia, and Jayden and Jordan Schwan; and siblings Dennis (Jo) Heller, Diane (Gary) Ditmanson, and Deb (Larry) Haak; and many dear friends and family near and far.
