Dale was born on March 24, 1930, at South Shore, SD, to Ferdinand and Hilda (Kaaz) Zirbel. He attended country school through the eighth grade. Dale farmed with his parents before entering the U. S. Navy, serving his country for two years.

On September 14, 1955, Dale married Esther Gaikowski at Grenville, SD. Following their marriage, the couple farmed near Ortley. Dale also worked at the Summit Elevator for a few years. They purchased the family farm in 1960 and operated it full time until passing it on and selling it to their four sons. Dale continued to assist his boys and enjoyed sharing his farming advice and knowledge with them until his last days. Dale and Esther loved traveling south for the winter, spending time in Texas and Arizona.

Dale was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Waubay where he served on the church council. He was also a member of the Waubay American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. He served on several boards including the Summit School Board, Conservation Board and Sioux Valley Co-op Board. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards, singing, dancing and playing the harmonica. There was never a dull moment in Dale's life as he also enjoyed carpentry, gardening, fishing and hunting. He loved helping on the farm and checking the crops in his jeep. Above all else was his love for family, especially his wife.

Dale is survived by his wife, Esther, of Ortley; ten children: JoEllen (David) Evenson of Mesa, AZ, Lyle (Candace) Zirbel of Ortley, LaDonna (Pat) Hicks of Twin Brooks, SD, Ferdy (Susan) Zirbel of Ortley, Colleen (Gregory) Pearson of Ortley, Marsia (Joe) Butler of Waubay, Shelly (Scott) O'Farrell of Sioux Falls, SD, David (Cheri) Zirbel of Ortley, Jevon (Jen) Zirbel of Ortley and Mary (Brig) Schilling of Sioux Falls; 53 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; one sister, Jean Steinmetz-Hansen, of Watertown, SD; one step-brother, Arnie (Barb) Tesch, of Kent, WA; and one step-sister, Lois (Darrell) Hildebrandt, of Brookings, SD.
