Cynthia "Cindy" Smith

Cynthia "Cindy" Smith, age 75, of De Smet, SD, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at Avantara in Lake Norden, SD.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in De Smet, SD. Father Terry Weber will officiate with music provided by Ann Larson as organist.

If sent prior to the service, the family requests you please direct memorial cards and florals to the Osthus Funeral Home in De Smet.

There will be no burial at this time.

She was born May 20, 1948, to John and Lorna Gubbins of Iroquois, SD.

She attended school in Iroquois. She met her husband Rick in 1966 at a dance in Iroquois.

She attended SDSU and in 1968, married Rick at Goodfellow AFB, TX. They later lived in England and Turkey. In 1975, they moved to Ft Meade, MD where they lived until returning to SD in 1994.

She worked as a daycare provider and for the Department of Defense in MD. She also worked for the Good Samaritan home, and law offices in De Smet.

Her loves included her grandchildren, gardening, crafting, puzzling, reading, walking, camping, and family gatherings. She loved to travel, volunteered often, and gave blood regularly. She will be dearly missed.

Cindy was preceded in death by her mother and father.

Cindy is survived by her husband, two children, Bryan Smith, Abingdon, MD, and Krista Spence, Brookings, SD. Two grandchildren, Emma Spence, Brookings, SD, and Keaton Spence, Brookings, SD. Eleven siblings, Steve (Sheri) Gubbins, Littleton, CO, Joyce Delvaux, Brookings, SD,  Dave (Sue) Gubbins, Plattsburgh, NY, Darrell (JoAnne) Gubbins, Sioux Falls, SD, Mark Gubbins, Iroquois, SD, Mary (John) Johnston, Brookings, SD, Keith Gubbins, Rock Rapids, IA, Kevin Gubbins, Monroe, IA, Kay Christiansen, Mitchell, SD, Theresa Young, Brookings, SD, and Lynne (Steve) DeJong, Iroquois, SD.
