Betty Peterson Obituary
Betty Jane Peterson, age 94, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2019, at a local care center. She was the widow of Selmer Peterson. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2019, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel. Rev. Robert Waite will officiate. The family is requested to meet by 1:30 p.m. at the chapel.
Visitation will be at 12:30 p.m. at the chapel on Saturday, prior to the service.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Betty's grandchildren and great-grandchildren and the nursing staff at Watertown Care and Rehabilitation Center. Active pallbearers will be: Chase Peterson, Kayla Ulmer, Justin Heyn, Brad Heyn, Candy Johnson, Marlene Brugger, Cody Peterson and Dusty Peterson.
Betty was born on July 14, 1924, to Victor and Olive (Campbell) Floden, in Wallace, SD. She attended Mt. Pleasant #43 Country School and graduated from Florence High School in 1942. After high school Betty attended Aberdeen College and received her Teaching Degree. She then taught for 4 years at country schools.
On August 14, 1946, Betty was united in marriage to Selmer Peterson in Florence, SD. The couple farmed west of Florence for 59 years. Betty was a member of New Helgen Lutheran Church. She was the secretary for a Ladies Club and sewed drapes for Zimmel Furniture. Betty worked on the farm helping where she could. She canned, sewed, crocheted, cooked, cleaned, played cards and raised her four children. Betty loved growing flowers. She and Selmer enjoyed square dancing with a group from Florence called the Florence Whirlaways. Her special times were spent with her family, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and all of her friends and neighbors.
One of Betty's favorite quotes was "OH POOH" and will be definitely missed!
Betty is survived by her children: Stanley (Debby) Peterson of Watertown, SD, Sheryl Ward of Castlewood, SD and Wayne (Debra) Peterson of Wallace, SD; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eileen (Dick) Crawford of Redfield, SD and Janice Endres of Watertown, SD; and her daughter-in-law, Linda Peterson of Florence, SD.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Selmer, in 2007; her son, Steven; one grandson, Chad Peterson; her parents; her sister, Frances Redlin and her son-in-law, Dr. John "Doc" Ward. The family would like to give a special Thank You to the Watertown Care & Rehab Staff.
