On November 25, 1928 Betty Lou was born to Albert and Helen (Bonnichsen) Newland in Highmore, SD. Her childhood was spent helping her parents on the farm, attending country school as a young girl, and attending public school in Huron as she grew up. In her later teen years, Glenn Iverson captured Betty’s heart. They were married, June 16, 1946, in Bancroft, SD. By 1948, Glenn and Betty would have their first son, preparing to have their eldest daughter, and move to De Smet, SD to settle in & raise their family. After raising their four children to school ages, in the fall of 1967, Betty would go to work at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Elementary School as a teacher’s aide. She held this role for 25 years, retiring in 1993. Betty and Glenn were founding, active members of the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in De Smet, SD. Here she taught Sunday school for many years sharing her love of Jesus with so many lives.
Betty’s life was centered around faith, family, and food. A woman whose heart knew no bounds and whose hospitality touched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know her. Betty embraced the art of fellowship with a passion that was unparalleled. Her home was a haven of warmth, where the door was always open, prayer was always intimate, and the table perpetually set for friends, family, and strangers alike. Her kitchen was a place of wonder, where ordinary ingredients transformed into expressions of love, and every meal became a celebration of life and togetherness. May her memory inspire us all to open our hearts, share our tables, fervently pray for one another and cultivate relationships that display the gospel in real life to those around us.
Betty is survived by her four children and thirteen grandchildren: son, Randy (Veda) Iverson, Amanda (Paul) Tschetter, Bradley (Anna) Iverson; daughter, Sandie Lee, Stephanie (Alex) Botkin, Suzie (Brian) Sinclair; daughter, Debra (Duane) Haugen, Amber (Adam) Schwiesow, Adam (Nicole) Haugen, Ashley (Jared) Baker; and daughter, Linda (Mike) Bullis, Christopher (Amber) Bullis, Kevin (Kelly) Bullis, Scott Bullis, Mark Bullis, Matthew (Madeline) Bullis, and Jason Bullis; 20+ great grandchildren, and numerous extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; parents, Albert and Helen (Bonnichsen) Newland, and two siblings: Lyle and Delma.
