Avis Engels Obituary
Avis J. Engels, age 101, of Estelline, SD, formerly of Watertown, SD, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at Estelline Care Center.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 15, 2018, at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown, SD.
Minister Gary Witcher will officiate. Memorials may be directed to the Church of Christ in Watertown, SD. Avis was born on April 2, 1917, in St. Paul, MN and adopted by Samuel and Sadie (Stagner) Arkland.
At two years old, she moved with her parents to a farm northwest of Graceland, SD.
After a few years, the family moved into Henry, SD, where her father started a home milk dairy. She started her schooling at the public school in Henry and later moved to Watertown where she finished 5th and 6th grade at McKinley School.
Avis finished her schooling by graduating from Watertown High School. Through a girlfriend, Avis met Alrich Engels. They were married June 18, 1941, in Webster, SD.
Mr. Engels passed away on November 30, 1987, at the age of 77.
She continued to live in her home until her health led her to the care facility. She was a member of Church of Christ and a teacher for World Bible School, conducting correspondence courses with students in West Africa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alrich.
