Andy Hanson thought every day was good for fishing. He passed away Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at Edgewood Vista in Watertown after a lingering illness, so he’s hooked a dozen walleye in heaven’s pond by now.
Visitation and prayer service will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown.
Interment will be at the Webster Cemetery with a graveside service at 2:00 p.m.
Andy was born in Webster, South Dakota on June 12, 1940, to Jens and Agnes (Fosheim) Hanson. He graduated from Webster High School, and attended college in Sioux Falls until he went home to farm due to his father’s illness.
Andy married Shirley Benson in 1961. They continued to farm and raised four children, Kim, Duane, Scott and Jeff. Shirley lost her battle with cancer in 1986.
Andy then moved to Watertown where he attended Lake Area Tech. He worked at Watertown Coop Elevator (now Agwrx) until he retired in 2020. Andy married Mary Jipp in 1990. He helped raise Mary’s daughter, Leah, and supported her horse habit.
He was survived by his wife of 33 years Mary; her daughter, Leah; his daughter Kim Hanson; three sons, Duane (Nicole, Jacob, Lucas Hanson), Scott (Ginger) Hanson, Jeff (Shawn, Logan, Hailey Englehart, Layne Hanson); five great-grandchildren; four siblings, Alice Donat, Joe (Darlene) Hanson, Dick (Donna) Hanson, Jerry (Jeannie) Hanson; and several nieces and nephews.
Andy is preceded in death by his parents Jens and Agnes Hanson; one brother Norman Hanson; and sister Lois Sims.
Andy was a jack of all trades. He was a builder, a mechanic and all-around handy man. He had many friends and met them at Wheel Inn most days. He is missed.
