Wilma Gerth Obituary

Wilma L. (Mickelson) Gerth, age 92, of Madison, SD, formerly Watertown, SD, passed away Sunday, October 7, 2018, at Bethel Lutheran Nursing Home in Madison, SD.

She was the widow of Bernard Gerth.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown.

Rev. Janet Miller will officiate. Music will be provided by Marcia Jelsma as organist.

The family is requested to meet at the chapel on Wednesday by 10:30 a.m. for a prayer service.

Visitation will be prior to services at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m.

Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown.

Honorary pallbearers will be Wilma's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Active pallbearers will be Brad Goodroad, Larry Goodroad, Darrell Goodroad, Gary Goodroad, Christopher Burke, Michael Martin and Mike Winrow.

Wilma was born June 11, 1926, to Martin and Mary (Summervold) Mickelson in Badger, MN.

They lived on a farm near Badger and later moved to a farm near Hendricks, MN and Astoria, SD.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

She attended a rural school near Astoria and Astoria Schools.

For a short time she lived in Oakland, California.

When she returned to South Dakota, she moved to Watertown where she was employed by the Memorial Hospital.

For many years, she enjoyed being a homemaker and raising their four children. She then worked for Herbergers for 22 years.

On October 19, 1947, Wilma married Bernard Gerth in the Lutheran Free Church in Hendricks, MN.

The couple made their home in Watertown.

She was a member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church.

Wilma enjoyed dancing, playing cards, shopping and visiting with friends and family.

Wilma is survived by her children: Carol (Terry) Andersen of Madison, SD, Candace (Mike) Burns of Rapid City, SD, Colleen (Tim) Martin of Lincoln, NE, and Dale (Petra) Gerth of Speyer, Germany; 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard; her parents; six sisters: Gladys Olsen, Gilma Oien, Ida Goodroad, Erlis Anderson, Merle Hermoe and Julia Hexum; three brothers: Arnold Mickelson, Harold Mickelson and Miner Mickelson; two grandchildren, Sarah Gordon and Brent Uthe.
