Vernon Lenning Obituary
Vernon B. Lenning, age 88, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Thursday, May, 10, 2018, at Ava's House-Sanford in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown. Rev. Janet Miller will officiate. Music will be provided by Marcia Jelsma as organist with Judy Everson as soloist. The family is requested to meet by 10:00 a.m. at the church on Wednesday for a family prayer service.
Visitation will be on Tuesday at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel from 4-7 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Petri Cemetery, rural Bruce, SD. Active pallbearers will be Vernons' grandchildren: Steve Stanton, Jeff Stanton, Eric Engels, Justin Engels, Jon Lenning, Mike Lenning, Ryan Chandler, Bryce Borkhuis, Kelly Chandler, Nikki Borkhuis and Amanda Lenning.
Vernon was born on September 16, 1929, to Oscar and Mary (Larson) Lenning in Bruce, SD. He attended country school in rural Bruce, SD, and then started farming with his father.
On May 22, 1955, Vernon was united in marriage to Jean Anderson in Bruce, SD. The couple continued farming in the Bruce area before moving to Watertown in 1960. Vernon continued working for area farmers and hauling flax straw. He started working as a contractor for himself, contracting with the U.S. Post Office hauling mail. He drove for many years, retiring in 1998.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. Vernon enjoyed fishing and especially spending time with his grandchildren. He loved his riding mower "big green" and being a jokester and pulling pranks on everyone.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Jean, of Watertown, SD; his children: Donna Lenning, Diane Stanton (Emil Wiese), Richard Lenning (Marsha Ringler), Robert Lenning and Nancy Borkhuis all of Watertown, SD; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Doris Glatzel, of Brookings, SD.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Wanda; his parents; one brother; and four sisters.
