What To Do
James “Jim” Utne, age 76, of Watertown, SD, passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown. Rev. Dan Ofstehage will officiate. Music will be provided by A.J. Sherrill as organist. The family is requested to meet at the church at 12:30 p.m. for a prayer service.
Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Monday, August 13, 2018, from 4-7 p.m. and prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Burial will take place at a later date at Ortley Cemetery in Ortley, SD. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Jim’s friends. Active pallbearers will be: Paul Utne, Jason Whitted, John Utne, Greg Utne, Joey Utne, Jesse Kumpf, and Adam Rieffenberger
Jim was born on June 23, 1942, in Webster, SD, to Samuel and Doris (Cooper) Utne. He attended school through the eighth grade in Ortley, SD. Throughout his younger years, he worked at various locations.
On November 9, 1963, Jim married Lulabell “Lu” Kumpf in Mina, SD. He then started Utne Construction, where he continued to work until his death. Jim and family owned the Midland Building and operated Maple Street Diner, which he also currently still owned.
Jim enjoying spending time at the Casino, selling fireworks for 35 years, fishing and being with his family. He was very proud to be 42 years sober. Jim’s greatest joys in the ending days of his life were his convertible and his candy drawer, which all his family and friends knew about.
Jim is survived by his children: Dawn (Daryl) Bailey of Belton, TX, Stacy (Jeff) Hagen and Shelly (Andy) Hartford, all of Watertown, SD; nine grandchildren: Josh, Torrie (Victor), Taylee, Whitney (Seth), Samantha, Brooklyn, Wyatt, Milla and Darrell; one great-granddaughter, Emery; his special friend, Bonnie Thompson of Watertown, SD; two brothers, William Utne of Ortley, SD, and Thomas (Robin) Utne of Summit, SD; and his sister, Mary Jo Whitted, of Sioux Falls, SD.
Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Lu; his parents; two brothers, Richard and Theodore; and one sister, Barbara.
